In 1951, the Silver Gate Yacht Club began as just a dream in the hearts of a handful of San Diego Boat owners, but it soon evolved into a commitment to make this dream a reality. The first step was the completion of by-laws that were needed to receive a state charter. These by-laws came together during an overnight camp out on the bare sands of Shelter Island and were finished at dawn. An event celebrated at our Silver Fizz […]
Looking through the club roster, there aren’t many old timers left, and several people have asked me about how the club started and we got the club house, so perhaps now would be a good time to put it on paper. The marina is built on the site of an old land fill. The land fill operations were completed in 1974. Subsequently, Kohl, a developer went to the city of Brisbane and offered to develop the site in exchange for […]

The Sausalito Cruising Club was founded in 1949 as a boating and social club. The club facility is a refurbished WWII ammunition barge that was acquired in 1955. It is docked at Dunphy Park within walking distance of beautiful downtown Sausalito. It has a CF number making it a true vessel. The concrete bottom was installed in 1984 by sinking it into Richardson Bay channel and then floating the ammunition barge onto it. Once combined, the structure was then refloated […]

The seven founding members1 of the Sausalito Yacht Club were already junior members of other yacht clubs, but with teenage hubris thought they could do better themselves. The founders conceived and established the new club on New Year’s Eve of 1942. The time was right. World War II had called many of the older, local boat owners to Europe or the Pacific. Before heading off to war, they trusted their boats to the care of the club’s young founders, the […]
How did we get where we are today? Back in the late thirties, Dr. Jack E. Taylor and Dr. Glenn E. Thorpe, sailing friends, met on a regular basis for lunch at a restaurant overlooking Santa Monica Bay. As with all yachting types, the conversations during these lunches invariably turned to the subject of boats and boating. Before long, these men who jokingly called themselves the “End of the World Yacht Club”, were joined by Boyd “Bud” Verplank and Stratford […]

Hans Schneider is still reflecting “…some enthusiastic members approached the City of San Leandro to lease some land and build a clubhouse. The members loaned the club money, interest free, and the work of building the clubhouse was done by volunteers. When you came into the clubhouse in those days the floor was concrete painted red. The bar was from plywood, tables were cable wheels covered with plywood, the chairs were from Goodwill, and everybody was happy to have a […]
